By the end of the year, the German defence company HENSOLDT expects further orders for the production of TRML-4D air surveillance and target acquisition radars intended for Ukraine.

This was announced by the sensor specialist today as part of its Capital Markets Day 2025 presentation. According to HENSOLDT, the orders previously secured will already generate revenue of around €500 million.

The additional orders now expected are likely to add another two to three-digit million amount, depending on their scope. Further details, such as the order volume or the contracting party, were not disclosed during the presentation.

Upon enquiry, a company spokesperson confirmed to me once again that further orders are expected to be placed this quarter and added that deliveries will be made later – therefore most likely in or starting next year.

It is also unclear whether the radars to be produced and delivered are stand-alone solutions, or whether they are expected to be part of further contracts awarded to Diehl Defence.

The Überlingen-based company manufactures the IRIS-T SLM air defence system, which is highly appreciated in Ukraine and comes with the TRML-4D as its standard radar solution.

HENSOLDT, with funding from the German government, is producing 18 of these radar units as part of the IRIS-T SLM deliveries, eight of which have been delivered to Ukraine to date. In addition, 16 radar systems have already been delivered some time ago and are being used in Ukraine as stand-alone solutions.

The production of further TRML-4D radars for Ukraine is also planned. A corresponding contract was made public at the end of July 2025. However, the exact scope of the deliveries and the contracting party are still unknown.

Even though as a result of the German government’s changed communication strategy, fewer and fewer details are being disclosed by HENSOLDT, Ukraine remains one of the most important sales markets for TRML-4D radars, and the announcement that further contracts are to be concluded this quarter only serves to demonstrate that they are even expanding their market share.

However, it’s also a win-win situation for Ukraine. The TRML-4D is a state-of-the-art air surveillance and target acquisition radar capable of detecting and tracking approximately 1,500 targets within a radius of up to 250 kilometres.

Just recently, the sensor specialist announced that Ukraine will receive radars in the future that can not only identify and track the usual targets such as drones, cruise missiles, aircraft, helicopters and the like, but also detect enemy artillery and mortar positions.

Within the Ukrainian Air Force, the TRML-4D is therefore undoubtedly one of the most modern and powerful air surveillance radars in existence, and given the number of radars currently in service, it certainly plays an important role in identifying and tracking Russian air targets throughout Ukraine, day and night.

One can only hope that the expected contracts will be signed as quickly as possible so that deliveries can not only begin, but also be completed as soon as possible.

In view of Russia’s recent massive attacks, which were largely directed against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, every single day counts in the truest sense of the word.
