Germany finances 15,000 WIY STRILA interceptor UAVs for Ukraine

Germany will finance 15,000 WYI STRILA interceptor drones for the National Guard of Ukraine. This will not only bolster Ukraine’s air defences against Russian drones, but also represent a further investment in the Ukrainian defence industry.

Even after more than four years of uninterrupted military aggression against Ukraine, Russia continues to deploy hundreds of drones every week away from the front line to destroy predominantly civilian targets, such as Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has for a while been turning to so-called interceptor drones to counter these threats. The advantages of this approach are clear.

Such drones are straightforward to manufacture and usually cost only a few thousand euros to produce, which, given a confirmed interception rate of at least 68% (as of October 2025), guarantees exceptional cost-effectiveness compared to jamming, mobile fire groups, cannon-based air defence systems and other methods used to counter these targets.

According to a comprehensive analysis of data by the international investigative collective Tochnyi*, between April 2024 and March 2025, more than 95% of all interceptor drones were used against Russian reconnaissance drones. According to a more recent analysis, this figure now stands at just around 60%, whilst the remaining approximately 40% are being used against Russian loitering munitions. And this trend is continuing.

To meet the growing demand of its own army, Ukraine is also relying on foreign funding, including from Germany, the UK and Canada.

As the German Embassy in Ukraine announced yesterday on its X profile (formerly known as Twitter), Germany will fund a total of 15,000 WIY STRILA interceptor drones for the National Guard of Ukraine.

This is an interceptor drone manufactured by the Ukrainian company “WIY Drones”, which is specifically designed to intercept fast and highly manoeuvrable aerial targets. Also for this reason, the interceptor UAV has a maximum speed of 350 kilometres per hour, which makes it one of the fastest commercially available interceptor drones in the world.

A 700-gram warhead, the dual-camera module and countermeasures against jamming are intended to ensure the effective interception of the Shahed-136/131 drones and other threats deployed on a daily basis.

WIY Drones is receiving active support from the German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems, which, according to its own statements, had previously invested in the Ukrainian company.

This investment, together with the contract now awarded — worth several million euros — will initially increase the production capacity in Ukraine to meet the urgent demand. According to an interview with Oboronka, the production capacity stood at 100 interceptor drones per day as recently as the beginning of the month.

According to Quantum Systems, it may also be possible in the future to export any surplus production to buyers outside Ukraine.

Just recently, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is currently capable of producing around 2,000 effective and combat-proven interceptor drones per day, and that this figure could be increased even further with additional investments. After deducting Ukraine’s own needs, at least 1,000 units could be supplied to allies.

A potential export is therefore not that unlikely. Ultimately, it will largely depend on how the WIY STRILA interceptor drones develop further and how they perform in day-to-day operations.

According to the X-Post of the German Embassy in Ukraine, the contract also includes training on the system, logistical support and the further development of the WIY STRILA, and, based on the known production capacity, should be completed by the end of the year.

The crème de la crème is neglected

It is unclear whether the German government would have selected an interception drone from the Ukrainian company WIY Drones even without Quantum Systems’ investment, but this does not seem very likely.

After all, as of January 2026, the WIY STRILA had been deployed in just over ten missions against Shahed drones. According to the Ukrainian manufacturer, this is because deliveries to the Ukrainian army had been very limited up to that point, with the first major shipment of several hundred units not taking place until mid-February 2026.

It is all the more surprising, then, that – according to publicly available information – the crème de la crème of Ukrainian interceptor drones has so far received no state funding from Germany. After all, these systems proved their worth long ago and are achieving the best results.

These include, among others, the BULLET interceptor drones produced by General Cherry, which, according to the company, have already intercepted several hundred Shaheds, as well as the STING drone produced by Wild Hornets.

Many experts currently regard it as one of the best, if not the best, interceptor drone for deployment against Russian Shaheds. According to Wild Hornets, more than 3,000 enemy drones were intercepted in the first seven months of frontline deployment alone, whilst success rates average between 80% and 90%.

It is therefore all the more likely that other motives and factors, such as Quantum Systems’ investment in WIY Drones, played a decisive role in the selection of the drone.

Likely not the first German funding for Ukrainian interceptor drones

The decision to fund WIY STRILA interceptor drones for the National Guard of Ukraine follows the announcement made in May 2025 by Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the Ministry of Defence that Germany would, with immediate effect, also provide funding for the Ukrainian defence industry.

This step had already been in preparation for months under the Scholz government. Although the focus at that time was on the production of far-reaching weapon systems, the Ukrainian Presidential Office publicly confirmed as early as June 2025 that Germany was prepared to fund Ukrainian interceptor drones.

In addition, WELT previously reported on several occasions that Germany would be funding, among other things, VB140 Flamingo interceptor drones made by the Ukrainian company Vin Bees Innovations.

It is therefore highly likely that the funding for the 15,000 WIY STRILA drones is not the first instance of Germany providing funding for Ukrainian interceptor drones, even though the aforementioned contract was never officially confirmed.

And given the current rise in demand, this is unlikely to be the last time the German government provides funding for Ukrainian interceptor drones.
